Best Manga Series to Start Collecting in 2025

Manga collecting in 2025 is in a quiet golden age. Box sets are gorgeous, omnibus editions keep shrinking the cost-per-chapter of long-running series, and English print runs catch up with Japan faster than ever. Whether you are buying your first volume or filling the last gap on a long shelf, the question is not what is good — almost everything is good — it is what is worth committing to.

For new collectors, we always start with three series. Fullmetal Alchemist is a complete 27-volume run with a clean ending, beautiful art, and a story that genuinely rewards re-reading; the omnibus 3-in-1 editions are an excellent value entry point. Death Note is a tight 12-volume thriller — easy to finish, hard to forget, and endlessly re-lendable to friends. Attack on Titan, now complete at 34 volumes, is the modern blockbuster everyone should read at least once.

If you want a series you can grow into, Berserk, Vagabond, and Vinland Saga are the holy trinity of mature, art-forward manga. Each one is a long-term commitment, but the deluxe editions are some of the most beautiful books any publisher prints in any genre — they look as good on a shelf as a fine art monograph.

For action and shōnen fans, One Piece is the obvious mountain: enormous, joyful, and now far more affordable thanks to the omnibus editions. Demon Slayer at 23 volumes and Jujutsu Kaisen are both excellent shorter alternatives if One Piece feels intimidating. My Hero Academia is approaching its conclusion and reads beautifully as a complete arc.

If you want something quieter, Mushishi, A Silent Voice and Solanin by Inio Asano are perfect three-to-ten-volume series that prove manga does literary fiction as well as anything in print. Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama is the most consistently stunning ongoing series being published in English right now and an easy recommendation for anyone who loves illustration.

A practical tip for collectors in 2025: prioritise complete-or-nearly-complete series, buy omnibus and deluxe editions where they exist, and pick one ongoing series at a time so the shelf grows with intention rather than accident.
